Our History

Building Community Through Generations

Mildred Baptist Church began its worship services on the first Sunday in June 2002, led by Reverend Shirley Hill and Reverend Garry Bryant. Seventeen years later, we continue to enjoy these services, guided by the Holy Spirit and our current pastor, Reverend Walter Cherry, Jr.

In 2009, under Pastor Cherry’s leadership and with the support of the congregation, a new project was initiated to expand our dining room. By the third Sunday in October 2010, we celebrated two major milestones: the church’s 100th Anniversary and the completion of our new Fellowship Hall.

This Fellowship Hall was dedicated and named The W.C. Fellowship Hall in honor of Pastor Rev. Walter Cherry, Jr.

Guiding Us with Faith and Compassion

Rev. Walter Cherry, Jr. served as pastor of Mildred Baptist Church for over 50 years, from 1973 until his passing in June 2024. Under his leadership, the church built a new sanctuary in 1991, marking a significant milestone in its growth. Rev. Cherry also guided the church to financial freedom with the mortgage burning in 1997.

He led the creation of the W.C. Fellowship Hall in 2010, celebrating the church’s 100th anniversary. His unwavering faith and dedication to the congregation left a lasting legacy, impacting both the spiritual and physical growth of Mildred Baptist Church.

In 2024, Rev. Garry Bryant was elected as pastor, continuing the work Rev. Cherry began. His vision and service will never be forgotten.

In 2024 he became the Pastor of Mildred Baptist Church in Mildred, North Carolina.

Pastor Alford’s desire as a church; is to be within the community proclaiming the Word of Christ and providing good deeds whenever possible to the community.

As a visionary, he implemented a community outreach program that included launching the first social media campaign, a women’s ministry and a space for every voice to be heard amongst his members and his community. One of his most enjoyable events is the nursing home project, where he leads his members in spreading holiday cheer to local nursing homes during the holiday season.  A community clothing ministry closet was established within the church to assist with clothing needs (this is just an example of a program). Amongst his future vision, one is to establish a community “food bank” that will feed families in time of necessities for children and their family members.

Pastor Bryant is a man who loves God, God’s people and His Word.  He enjoys family time, watching, coaching and officiating basketball/volleyball, bowling, fishing, cooking out on the grill for the community and church reading and learning whatever he can to share with others.  He enjoys preaching and teaching the Word of God with power, conviction, and simplicity at every opportunity that avails without compromise.

Pastor states he loves the young, the elderly and unchurch people groups. The young, because they have so much to gain.  The elderly, because they have so much to share.  The unchurch because their eternal destiny is at hand.

Somewhere; in between all of that, pastor states you will find his ministry calling and the existence (personal words or goals)
